Friend,
After a weekend dedicated to celebrating our nation’s founding, it is the natural moment to reflect upon the special gifts being an American citizen confers.
Just days ago, the Supreme Court ruled to remove power from judges nationwide to block Donald Trump's unconstitutional executive order eliminating birthright citizenship.
This decision leaves families across the country in a state of fear and uncertainty about the future of their children. While birthright citizenship remains the law here in Connecticut, this ruling has paved the way for Trump's executive order to go into effect in many other states. That means, when Connecticut families travel to another state, their rights won't necessarily follow them across state lines.
This is in direct violation of the Constitution and the very fabric of our country.
If you are born in the United States, you are a U.S. citizen. Period. This fundamental right has been enshrined in our Constitution under the 14th Amendment for greater than 125 years. In fact, this issue has already gone to the Supreme Court – twice. And twice, the Supreme Court has upheld it.
This feckless conservative Supreme Court majority has chipped away at two bedrock constitutional principles: the guarantee of birthright citizenship and an American justice system that can serve as an effective check and balance to prevent illegal and unconstitutional actions by the government. They claim that this decision is merely procedural, but that is a lie they tell to absolve themselves of leaving millions of Americans newly vulnerable to government overreach.
With our fundamental freedoms, core constitutional values, justice, and democracy under attack like never before, you have my word that I will continue fighting back against this administration with every tool I have in Congress. I will never let up. I will never shy away.
I'm filled with gratitude knowing that you're with me in the fight ahead of us. Thank you – today and always.
Sincerely,
Dick
