4 ACTIONS TO TAKE THIS WEEK
|
Our city is under attack. Federal agents are conducting a series of raids all throughout Los Angeles, ripping families apart, and subjecting our community to horrific conditions in the Metro Detention Center. ICE is targeting members of our community– street vendors, day laborers, carwasheros and factory workers. This fascist onslaught against immigrants is an attack on the working class. It is of utmost importance that we, members of DSA, show up and come out for our immigrant neighbors.

THE UNITED FRONT AND THE POPULAR FRONT: AN EDUCATIONAL FOR SOCIALIST STRATEGIES OF RESISTANCE
|
Wednesday, July 9 @ 7:00 pm
|
Trump’s second presidential term has ushered in a period of consolidated right-wing power; we’re witnessing titans of capital, conservative judges, Republican members of congress, and the executive branch band together to dismantle public goods and terrorize immigrants.
How can and should the left work together to effectively fight back against this authoritarian politics?
The DSA-LA Political Education Committee invites all comrades to join us for this educational session focused on historic forms of socialist resistance to authoritarian movements — specifically the United Front and the Popular Front. This event will feature a short presentation and an interactive discussion focused on ways these strategies have shaped socialist organizational tactics and alliances, and asses their relevance for our current political moment.
Comrades are invited to review the following readings as foundation for discussion at the event:
- The Popular Front Didn’t Work (Post in Jacobin, 2017): The author argues against calls to renew a Popular Front Strategy to combat Trumpism. This piece includes historical examples of how the Popular Front and the United Front strategies shaped anti-fascist work by the Communist Party USA, and he argues that “a popular front strategy in the United States would be even more destructive to the socialist left’s prospects than it was in the 1930s and 1940s.”
- What Should Socialists Do? (Schwartz & Sunkara in Jacobin, 2017): In the wake of Trump’s first victory and DSA’s surprise growth, the authors argue that DSA can become “a real working-class organization” by “becoming the openly socialist wing of a mass movement opposed to a bipartisan neoliberal consensus.” Does this argument have salience for us today?
