In poetic fashion, Donald Trump and his MAGA Republican allies signed their big, ugly, dangerous budget into law on none other than July 4th—a day meant to celebrate America as a land of liberty, justice, and opportunity for all. But that’s not the America they’re celebrating or building.

With this budget, Trump and the GOP’s version of America does not give liberty and opportunity to anyone except the wealthy and powerful few. It’s one that shamelessly throws millions of working people under the bus and ignores their cries for lower costs of living. It’s one that strips their healthcare and food assistance rather than uplifting them. And it’s one that rips our freedoms away while turning us against each other.

This is not what America is meant to be, and not the version of America that Minnesotans believe in. In Minnesota, we have our neighbors’ backs, we work together for the good of our communities, and we stand up for freedom and opportunity for everyone.

We believe in politics that lift people up—not tear away their freedoms and security. But standing up to Trump’s cruel agenda and defending a more hopeful vision for America takes all of us pulling together.
