Dear Friend,

Last week, I voted ‘NO’ on the final version of the GOP budget bill. This bill includes policies that makes deep cuts to Medicaid, SNAP, and education funding, while extending tax breaks to the wealthiest Americans and large corporations. Estimates show that approximately 17 million people could lose their healthcare coverage and that rural hospitals, nursing homes, and community health centers may face increased strain and even closure. It also allocates billions of dollars toward immigration enforcement initiatives, including the expansion of detention centers, while reducing investments in public initiatives. I believe this budget includes policies that will worsen economic inequality and reduce access to essential services for working people.

Standing Against Political Violence

Image

I took to the House floor to speak in support of H.Res.519, condemning the horrific attacks on Melissa Hortman, her husband Mark, Senator John Hoffman and his wife, Yvette. These acts of political violence are heartbreaking and a chilling reminder of the growing risks public servants face just for doing their jobs. I honored my friend, Speaker Emerita Melissa Hortman, whose life and legacy were stolen from us far too soon. Violence cannot become part of our political reality. Congress must all stand united across party lines to say ‘enough’. Watch here.

United Against the New Travel Ban

Image

I met up with Rep. Yassamin Ansari to discuss the Trump Administration’s latest travel ban. The ban targets 19 countries, many of which are experiencing conflict, poverty, or humanitarian crises yet the administration uses national-security claims to justify the ban. While green-card holders and dual citizens are exempt, many families are still worried that travel could mean permanent separation from loved ones overseas. Along with my colleagues, I introduced the NO BAN Act to prevent future presidents from holding the authority to suspend or restrict any group of immigrants from entering the United States by prohibiting religious discrimination from immigration-based decisions. Rep. Ansari and I talked about what this means for our districts, for immigrants across the country, and why Congress must fight back with everything we’ve got. Watch our full conversation here.
