John, I hope you got the chance to relax and enjoy Independence Day celebrations this weekend. I have to admit, it’s got me thinking a lot about what it is that our founders fought so hard for.
You deserve a government that works for you, stands up for you, and supports you. Not one that hands out tax breaks like candy to billionaires while working families get left behind.
But last week, Republicans in Congress rammed through Trump’s so-called “One Big Beautiful Bill Act” — the one I’ve been calling the Big BS Bill for what it does to American families.
It explodes the deficit. It gives huge breaks to the ultra-rich. It guts Medicaid, SNAP, and services that form the bedrock of the American social safety net. It defunds Planned Parenthood while designating $160B to ICE to escalate mass deportations. In short, it remakes our country.
And 80% of the benefits go to the top 1%.
The average household making under $100,000? Their tax cuts will top out around $200 a year while the wealthiest handful of Americans will get their largest tax cut — ever. All while wreaking havoc on rural hospitals, free school lunches for hungry kids, and affordable healthcare that so many depend on.
This is not economic policy. It’s robbery in broad daylight.
I voted NO (every Democrat did). And I’d do it again.
In the GOP’s effort to force this bill forward, it saw a lot of last-minute edits. But something that didn’t change from start to finish is the fact that this budget bill will be devastating to our families.
I’ll be honest with you: the MAGA majority is counting on their deceptive tactics to keep voters confused about exactly why they’re feeling the pain. The GOP will obscure, lie, and use their media machine and billionaire donors to keep the truth from the people who need it most.
I’m sure you have questions and concerns about what you are seeing around this bill. My team wants to hear them. Please take a moment to send my team your thoughts and questions here. [[link removed]]
My hope is to use my email communications to directly answer your questions and concerns, while providing some helpful resources for your families and community to navigate the aftermath of this bill’s passage.
Lastly, I want to assure you that I didn’t come to Congress to rubber-stamp handouts to the ultra-wealthy. I came to protect working families in Pennsylvania and across the country from predatory bills like this one. This Independence Day, as Trump signed that bill, I was reminded once again of just how important that job is.
I’m not backing down. So, let’s do this together.
— Mary Gay
P.S. Last week also heightened the importance of the 2026 midterm and getting some real checks and balances in place instead of a GOP trifecta. Most of the components of the budget bill will strategically hit post-midterms… a true sign that the GOP is well aware that they are acting in opposition to public opinion. The special interest this budget bill is looking to serve is already funneling resources to the districts that are most vulnerable to flip. Democrats rely on grassroots dollars, and we need supporters like you by our side early in the cycle. If you are able, please consider donating so we can get resources to where they can make the biggest impact. [[link removed]]
