Trump’s DOGE cuts to our federal government likely played a role in exacerbating the impact of the devastating, tragic, and deadly Texas floods.

The National Weather Service issued warnings about the flash floods, but key vacancies in local offices caused by Trump’s DOGE cuts likely hindered how fast the National Weather Service could get life-saving information to the media and other people.

We see this in San Antonio. The weather office there no longer has a warning coordination meteorologist (whose job is coordinating warnings with the media and is the public face of the office). 

This is a basic role that shouldn’t have been empty. Other cuts to forecasting and weather alert offices in Texas’ Kerr County have left critical positions vacant at a time when people need them most. 

Although there is an obvious need to fix this so no one else gets hurt, Trump dismissed concerns about identifying what went wrong, calling the idea “disgusting.” 

This is the problem with MAGA: it promises everything, delivers nothing, evades accountability, deflects mistakes on to others, and does this all to serve a billionaire class of campaign donors.

But we can do something about it. We can stop this madness and deliver the antidote, forging a new consensus to reject America’s slide into MAGA extremism.
