Kennedy Institute Newsletter | Summer 2025
FROM THE CEO, ADAM HINDS

Two key questions often emerge at the Institute as we strive to strengthen American democracy:

How can we effectively reveal challenges in our democratic systems to drive meaningful improvements? And how can we promote a healthier political environment—even amidst deep disagreement?

This past month, we made significant strides on both fronts.

After more than a year of collaboration, we were proud to launch our Bolstering Elections report in partnership with the Dole Institute. Twenty leading national experts came together to examine how elections are funded in the U.S.—a surprisingly complex and often overlooked issue. Their insights help clarify a critical piece of our democratic infrastructure while empowering local election administrators to advocate for their needs.

We also advanced our commitment to model productive deliberation among public officials. In a nationally televised conversation at the Institute, Pennsylvania Senators John Fetterman (D) and Dave McCormick (R) demonstrated what it means to engage across the aisle—thoughtfully, respectfully, and publicly.

And we closed out another exciting year of civics programming. From hosting the state finals of the National Civics Bee to preparing to launch our new Kennedy-Breyer Civic Scholars summer program later this month, we continue to invest in the next generation of leaders.

When I served in the state Senate, the most rewarding moments were when years of collaboration with communities and colleagues produced real progress. This month feels like one of those moments.

I hope you’ll read on to see why—and what’s ahead.

REPORT RELEASE: "Bolstering Funding and Practices for Resilient Elections"

On June 18, the Kennedy and Dole Institutes launched a landmark report ([link removed]) on bolstering funding for American elections with a virtual event featuring insights and analysis from some of the researchers, practitioners, and experts who contributed to the report. It was moderated by former election administrator and senior advisor to the Bolstering Elections Initiative Tammy Patrick.

The comprehensive anthology report, “Bolstering Funding and Practices for Resilient Elections: Sustainable Funding and Models of Success at the State and Local Level,” gives election administrators and policymakers the data and research necessary to bolster voting infrastructure at the state and local levels.

CIVIC EDUCATION

School Year 2024-2025

The need for students to have access to high-quality civic education opportunities is more important than ever. We are grateful for the partnership of so many dedicated educators, and for the thoughtful participation of students across the country who engaged with us to talk about voting rights, immigration, environmental policy, and AI and data policy. We look forward to working with new and returning schools in the fall to engage students with hands-on programming that develops their knowledge and understanding of government and the legislative process.

National Civics Bee

On May 20, in partnership with the U.S. Chamber of Commerce Foundation, the Institute hosted the Massachusetts State Finals of the National Civics Bee competition, a nationwide civic knowledge competition for students in grades 6-8. Six Massachusetts students competed for the opportunity to go to the national finals in Washington D.C. in November.
