In the week leading up to Independence Day, Congress voted to pass H.R. 1, the budget reconciliation package also called the “One Big Beautiful Bill.”

This bill, now signed into law, slashes roughly one trillion dollars in health care and food assistance from limited-income Americans – while exploding the national debt and deficit – in order to pay for a new round of tax cuts that would give the greatest benefits to the wealthiest Americans.

For weeks, we’ve spoken out against this bill and encouraged you to do the same. By calling your representatives and speaking out, you fought to defend every American’s right to nutritious food. Thank you.

Many of those representatives took a stand. For example, just last week:
* Representative Jim McGovern led hours of resistance efforts in the U.S. House on Wednesday, including nearly an hour ushering in queues of representatives asking repeatedly that the body consider an amendment to the bill that would prevent cutting SNAP and Medicaid.
* Representative Hakeem Jeffries started speaking before 5 am on Thursday and held the floor continuously for a record-breaking 8+ hours, delaying the vote till midafternoon and stopping the majority’s effort to pass it in the wee hours of the morning.

Every Democrat and some Republicans voted against this bill. But while the majority of Americans opposed the bill, a tie in the Senate (broken by Vice President Vance) and a razor-thin majority in the House passed it.

Hunger Free America has been in this fight for decades.

We’ve seen setbacks before; policies that made it harder for families to put dinner on the table, for workers to have enough to eat, for children to have nutritious meals that make learning and growing possible.

Part of this work is choosing how to respond when harmful, dangerous policies become law. We’ve responded by mobilizing grassroots advocacy, working with community organizations, collaborating with nonprofits, and government offices.

We’ve had big wins, and we don’t give up.

What’s next?

As Representative Jeffries states at the end of his record-breaking speech on the House floor, we will press on.
