#BlackLivesMatter #JusticeForDieria
It happened. The horrific injustices of the world hit our OWR family. One of our own, OWR organizer Andre Walton, lost his brother yesterday in a senseless act of violence. We are absolutely heartbroken for Andre and his family and outraged by the relentless injustices that poor and marginalized folks are subjected to every day.
Andre has been quite literally on the streets fighting for justice for his community and for all who have been victims of police brutality -- and now he needs us to stand with him as he fights for justice for his own brother.
Three weeks ago, Andre sent a thoughtful email to everyone on our listserv. Here is an excerpt from what he wrote:
"As a black man in America, I fear for my brothers and sisters. I fear one day I may wake up to the news that the latest unarmed black man murdered by the police will be my brother or my father. But watching all my black, white and brown comrades stand in solidarity with black lives -- sometimes even using their own bodies to shield those being victimized by police during the protests -- I have renewed hope that I will never have to experience that unimaginable pain that so many in my community have experienced."
We currently do not know who killed Dieria, but it’s heartbreaking that he wrote about the constant fear of losing his family to senseless violence, only to experience such unbearable pain weeks later.
If you’re able and so inclined, there has been a GoFundMe account set up to help Andre’s family pay for funeral expenses, here.
We’ve got to lift each other up.
In solidarity,
