John,
We probably don’t need to tell you that fighting for accountability for January 6th is an uphill battle right now. But we are seeing some encouraging news, even as the broader environment remains challenging.
Here are four stories that show why working to hold election deniers and insurrectionists accountable IS worth the fight:
- Kenneth Chesebro, a main coordinator of the “fake elector” plot, was disbarred in New York for his part in the attempt to overturn Georgia’s 2020 elections result for Donald Trump.
- Similarly, a California court recently upheld a recommendation that John Eastman, who was central to Trump’s effort to subvert the 2020 election, should lose his law license.
- A federal jury ordered David Walls-Kaufman to pay $500,000 to the widow of DC police officer Jeffrey Smith, who he assaulted inside the Capitol on January 6th, 2021.
- Edward Kelley was convicted for plotting to murder the FBI agents who investigated his role in January 6th, and tried to use his pardon from Trump as a “get out a jail free” card. But last week, a judge ruled that Trump's pardon did not apply to the murder plot, and sentenced Kelley to life in prison.
These are all important wins—and they shouldn’t fly under the radar.
We won’t give up our work holding insurrectionists accountable and fighting to protect our democracy from those who tried to overthrow it. If you believe no one is above the law, chip in now to power our work →
