Jeffrey Goldberg on Signalgate, Pete Hegseth, and the Risk of WWIII

Pete Hegseth, a middled-aged Caucasian man with slicked-back hair, standing amid a crowd of people, holds a mobile phone up to his ear. He is wearing a suit and tie and has a look of slight concern on his face.
Hi, I’m Josh Sanburn, producer with More To The Story. I remember reading the headlines and thinking, “This was written by The Onion. This can’t be real.”

The Trump Administration Accidentally Texted Me Its War Plans.” That was The Atlantic’s headline, and the story was written by Jeffrey Goldberg, the magazine’s editor-in-chief, who’d been inadvertently added to an internal Signal chat back in March about imminent military strikes against Houthi forces in Yemen. After getting personally attacked by White House officials, he published the chats in The Atlantic. And for Jeffrey, they showed a White House—and especially a secretary of defense in Pete Hegseth—that seemed more interested in cosplaying as a national security team than actually being one. “In the middle of that swirl, I didn’t really contemplate just how amazingly stupid the whole thing was,” Jeffrey tells host Al Letson on this week’s episode of More To The Story.

Many of those same White House officials headed up recent military operations against Iran and its nuclear facilities. Which is exactly why we wanted to bring Jeffrey on to the show. He’s seen how this White House and its national security team operates up close, and we wanted to know what he thought of an administration that is taking such serious action in the Middle East while mismanaging war plans in the past. It was an illuminating—and sometimes darkly funny—conversation. I hope you check it out.

We’re Celebrating a Decade of Reveal With Our Biggest Investigations and Impact

The first pilot episode of Reveal exposed how the Department of Veterans Affairs was overprescribing opioids to veterans and contributing to an overdose crisis. Journalist Aaron Glantz explained how he received—surprisingly quickly—a decade’s worth of opioid prescription data from the federal government.
“Sometimes, you have to sue to get the records,” he said. “I have to think that there were some people over there in DC who were as concerned as we were about this.”

After that first show was made, host Al Letson didn't know what to expect. “We weren’t sure if any public radio stations would even air it,” he said.

Reveal’s VA investigation sparked outrage. Congress held hearings during a government lockdown, and there’s been a sea change in the way veterans are prescribed painkillers. And today, the show is on more than 500 stations.

This week on Reveal, in an update of an episode that originally aired in March, we celebrate our 10-year anniversary with a look back at some of our favorite stories, from investigations into water shortages in drought-prone California to labor abuses in the Dominican Republic. And we interview the journalists behind the reporting to explain what happened after the stories aired.
