Let's be clear: the most powerful forces in American life would prefer
that Common Dreams didn't exist.

Corporate polluters, corrupt politicians, Wall Street banks . . . they
would all rather have a world where there was no such thing as
nonprofit, truly independent journalism.

You see, the mainstream corporate media covers issues like the climate
crisis as if there are "two sides" to every story. But we refuse to
cover "both sides" when one side is fact and the other is fiction.

The corporate media covers the economy from the point of view of Wall
Street, obsessing over every twist and turn of the stock market. We
focus on Main Street, where everyday Americans struggle with flat wages
and skyrocketing health care and housing expenses.

The corporate media largely ignores deep systemic injustices like income
inequality and the influence of money in politics. For us, systemic
injustices are our bread and butter.

That's why they would like nothing more than to have Common Dreams
disappear and never come back. And if we were just another for-profit
news outlet, they could buy us out or cut off our advertising.

But as long as we have you, our grassroots donors, we will never get
bought out or shut down.
