john,

Today, as we celebrate the birth of our nation, I’m reflecting on the promise of our democracy—and the responsibility we all share to protect it.

This holiday marks not just our independence, but the enduring fight to build a country where every voice is heard, every vote is counted, and every person has the freedom to live with dignity and opportunity.

We’ve been reminded that democracy isn’t something we can take for granted. It’s something we must nurture, defend, and strengthen in our communities, at the ballot box, and through the conversations we have with each other about the kind of country we want to leave to the next generation.

So today, alongside the parades, fireworks, and family gatherings, I hope we’ll each take a moment to honor the values that unite us and recommit ourselves to the work of making America a place where those founding ideals of liberty, equality, and justice are truly within reach for everyone.

Wishing you a safe and joyful Fourth of July!

—Kim
