Today we celebrate our independence from a tyrannical government.
We all know the words, but to truly understand what freedoms we are still fighting for, we must go to the source.
"We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men [people] are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.--That to secure these rights, Governments are instituted among Men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed, --That whenever any Form of Government becomes destructive of these ends, it is the Right of the People to alter or to abolish it, and to institute new Government, laying its foundation on such principles and organizing its powers in such form, as to them shall seem most likely to effect their Safety and Happiness.
DECLARATION of INDEPENDENCE
Yet today, not all people in this country are truly free to pursue life, liberty, or happiness.
- Gun violence is the number one killer of children in America.
- Black men are more than 23 times more likely to die from gun violence than white men.
- More than 70% of homicides of transgender people involve a gun.
- An average of 18 veterans die by suicide each day—over 70% of them with a firearm.
- And just yesterday, Congress passed a budget that slashed funding for communities most vulnerable to gun violence—fueling the crisis instead of solving it.
Despite the disappointment of yesterday’s vote—what many are calling the worst budget in history—we will not forget the words of our founders.
It is our right to change the law, and the government to ensure our safety and happiness. It is our duty as Americans.
We might feel bruised, but we are not beaten. And we are not giving up. Never.
History has shown us: real, lasting change comes from the States.
We’ve already seen victories this year across our state affiliates—and there are many more to come.
We the People must put an end to gun violence.
This Independence Day, let’s renew our commitment to the ideals that make this country worth fighting for.
We will win the fight for freedom, safety, and the right to live free from gun violence.
