Dear MoveOn member,
Last month, 5 million people took to the streets to reaffirm that we don’t do kings here. While Trump staged a coronation in D.C., we answered with the No Kings Day protest—nearly 2,000 events across the country. Trump tried to project strength and dominance, but the people showed up en masse and showed where the real power lies.
The Trump administration is taking a page right from the authoritarian playbook by working to criminalize and silence those who are pushing back. Ignoring the governor of California’s authority, Trump sent the National Guard and Marines to Los Angeles to violently disrupt people peacefully protesting for the rights of our immigrant neighbors.1 The administration abducted Columbia graduate student Mahmoud Khalil from his home and detained him for three months for speaking out for Palestinian rights.2 And following Trump’s lead, 41 antiprotest bills have been introduced in states across the country this year.3
But protest is who we are. From the fight for civil rights to the opposition to the Vietnam War to Occupy Wall Street to the Women’s March to the George Floyd movement, you could say protest is as American as apple pie.
Will you share this graphic on social media to remind everyone on this Independence Day that protest is an American tradition and who we are?

This year, MoveOn members have rallied to show up in critical moments to protect each other by:
Joining national Hands Off and No Kings Day mobilizations
Hosting speak-outs and other actions outside of key Republican members of Congress offices.
Leading Bring Kilmar Home actions and joining Disappeared in America events to expose the Trump administration’s abductions of immigrants and illegal deportations without due process.
Making more than 1.4 million calls to connect people to their representatives’ offices to protect Medicaid.
Protest is what MoveOn members do when immigrants are abducted from their homes and our communities. It’s what we do when Republicans across the country come for the things that keep our communities running, like public schools, the USPS, Social Security, and more. This is our mandate when our rights are under attack. And it’s what we will continue to do to stop this authoritarian MAGA takeover of our country.
Share the graphic above on whatever social media platform you’d like (or all!) to empower your community to continue showing up to fight for each other and a future we all deserve.
This Fourth of July, we watch our nation’s leaders cruelly strip away health care from 16 million people, take away food from families, and cut critical programming from our students, all to make the rich exponentially richer. And while this is a real setback, we are not giving up or backing down.
Thanks for all you do.
