Across the globe, autonomous and self-aware nonhuman animals like elephants, great apes, whales, and dolphins remain confined in zoos, aquariums, and roadside exhibits.
They didn’t choose captivity.
They didn’t forfeit their autonomy.
They were stripped of their freedom. And as a result, they continue to suffer physically and psychologically in environments that deprive them of their most basic needs and liberties. They, too, are entitled to justice.
