August 2019

Dear John,

There’s never been a better time to get involved with Phoenix DSA. With the National Convention now over, our chapter is hitting the ground running with campaigns to advance our organization’s priorities. Whether it’s fighting for a true single-payer Medicare for All healthcare system, focusing on rigorous but accessible political education locally, or working to elect the first democratic socialist president in American history, there is plenty of work to be done.

The Phoenix delegation at the DSA National Convention

DSA National Convention

DSA held its biennial National Convention in Atlanta earlier this month, and the Phoenix DSA delegation was there to represent our chapter. At our July chapter meeting, we debated and voted on resolutions and bylaws amendments for our delegates to support or oppose. Our delegates were pleased that the convention continued to support a strong national organization built on national campaigns. The conventional renewed DSA’s commitment to campaigning for Medicare for All, to electing Bernie Sanders, as well as new campaigns for working class demands like a Green New Deal and ending cash bail.

Arizona for Bernie 2020

The Arizona for Bernie 2020 coalition has been hard at work all summer long, talking to voters across the valley about Bernie’s transformative platform and what it means for working people. Sign up here for a future tabling or canvassing shift, and make sure to subscribe to the Arizona for Bernie 2020 newsletter if you haven’t already!

Socialist Night School

The Socialist Night School is back! Join us on Wednesday, August 28 at 7pm, at the ASU Memorial Union in Tempe for the first night of the 2019-20 course program. The subject of August’s course is a basic but fundamental one: What Is Capitalism? The full syllabus and links to all readings can be found online here. Following discussion of the reading material, we’ll be meeting up at Cornish Pasty Co. at 960 W University Dr. in Tempe for drinks, food, and camaraderie. First-timers and night school veterans are all encouraged to attend—see you there!

People’s Assembly for Medicare for All in CD9

The vast majority of Americans want Medicare for All. Now it's time for our elected representatives to step up and take on big pharma and the insurance lobby. If you live in Tempe, Mesa, or elsewhere in CD9, join the AZ Medicare for All Coalition to share healthcare stories, learn about M4A, and plan for an upcoming meeting with Rep. Greg Stanton to explain why his constituents need him to back HR1384: The Medicare for All Act of 2019. The event will be this Saturday, August 24th from 3-5pm on ASU’s Tempe Campus, CDS 234.
