With Donald Trump back in the Oval Office, and Congress and the Supreme Court largely unwilling to check his growing assertions of power or hold him accountable, our democracy is facing a crisis unlike anything we’ve ever seen in my memory.

We’ve seen Trump flout the Constitution, ignore records laws, defy congressional budgets, fire civil servants without regard for norms or laws, threaten judges who have checked his power and prosecutors who have held him accountable, and even expand his business interests and auction off access to the presidency.

Taken together, it seems like Trump would rather rule as a king than govern as a president. It’s safe to say that America’s founders would have been appalled.

Despite the deluge of challenges and threats, our team at CREW is working to hold the president accountable. We’re fighting back by bringing lawsuits, demanding transparency and uncovering ethics violations, corruption and lawlessness—but we can’t continue our work without your support.

Reading the Declaration of Independence, it’s hard not to hear echoes from the news today. The drafters were concerned that the king incited domestic insurrection, flouted laws, obstructed the administration of justice and deployed armies without the consent of states.

Does that sound familiar?

Clearly this Independence Day, our fight to protect our democracy is more urgent than ever.

That’s why CREW is working tirelessly to hold the Trump administration accountable and do our part to help our democracy align with the ideals laid out nearly 250 years ago.

In just the last six months, we’ve filed FOIA requests to uncover information on Trump’s memecoin dinner and his acceptance of a luxury jet from Qatar, rigorously tracked Trump’s conflicts of interest and sued to demand transparency from DOGE, the CDC and the Office of Management and Budget and to protect the jobs of civil servants who work to make Americans’ lives better.

And those are just a few of the actions we've taken since Trump was sworn in for his second term.
