This is obviously a very difficult time for the world, and for political organizing. Just as all of us have been quickly adjusting to the new normal of daily life under social distancing given the current COVID-19 virus public health emergency, we will now be holding meetings online.
The risk of exposure to COVID-19 is still very real -- especially out in the streets! Consider getting tested for piece of mind, collect data on this virus, and keep our communities as safe and healthy as we can right now. Be sure to wait at least 5 days after attending a protest to get tested for a more accurate result (false negative rates average 20%, so if you feel even the slightest bit sick please STAY HOME).

Mike Davis and Jon Wiener, authors of Set The Night On Fire: Los Angeles In The Sixties, are kicking off the DSA-LA Political Education Committee's Night School Series: Lost Angles with a discussion about the working-class radicals who fought the Los Angeles Police Department and the city economic and political elite in the 1960s.
By the early 1960s Los Angeles was a powderkeg, and the LAPD was a lit fuse. Under the direction of the powerful reactionary Chief William Parker, the department brutally enforced racial segregation in the black ghettos and white suburbs. But not content with policing the city’s racial hierarchy, they also swarmed gay bars in Silver Lake, busted hippie skulls on Venice Beach, handcuffed teen rock-and-rollers on the Sunset Strip, hounded socialists, and mass-arrested working-class black and Latino students who protested for free political expression and against the Vietnam War.
Their shared experiences with the LAPD gave these disparate groups a common set of grievances, and an uncommon foundation of solidarity. Understanding the currents that developed and movements that emerged in this period is critical to understanding Los Angeles politics today.
We're excited to bring you this conversation on July 2nd at 6pm PST which will be moderated by Jacobin staff writer and DSA-LA member Meagan Day.
This event is the first in the DSA-LA Political Education Committee's upcoming Night School Series Lost Angles: Piecing Together a Radical LA.

ON UNEMPLOYMENT COUNCILS IN LOS ANGELES: AN EDUCATIONAL, STRATEGY-BUILDING EVENT
|
Sunday, June 28th, 2020 at 2:30-5pm PST
Amidst a global health and economic crisis, US unemployment claims have surpassed 36 million—a level that approximates unemployment during the Great Depression. In response, some American socialists have called for a revival of Unemployed Councils, a type of project run most notably by the Communist Party USA in the 1930s that organized the jobless into a coherent, disciplined political block to agitate for (and win) clear demands.
In advance of our chapter’s September Local Convention, the Political Education, Housing and Homelessness, and Labor Committees invite members to an educational, strategy-building event designed to raise our collective knowledge of organizing efforts of and for the unemployed, and interrogate the opportunities and limitations of designing such a campaign locally.
At this interactive event, a presentation component will inform and ground discussion in an understanding of the past Depression-era project, the historical context in which it was executed, and its successes and failures.
