[link removed] [[link removed]] Happy Independence Day!

July 4th has always been one of my favorite holidays, and not just because of the barbecues, fireworks, or long weekends down the shore.

Independence Day is a time to come together and celebrate the country we love and its founding ideal — that we, the people, should shape our destiny, not a king or even a president.

In these tough times, I often think back to the winter of 1776, when New York had fallen to the British and American morale was low. The fate of the nation was hanging by a thread when Thomas Paine galvanized a nation in his pamphlet, “The American Crisis.” It rallied the troops, and by December, General Washington led his daring crossing of the Delaware and turned the tide at Trenton and Princeton. Two lines from Paine stick out:

“These are the times that try men’s souls.”

“Tyranny, like hell, is not easily conquered.”

As the president signs a truly despicable bill into law that harms New Jerseyans, I find comfort in those words and in the knowledge that generations of patriotic Americans before us have been engaged in the same struggle for freedom, justice, and opportunity for all. Nearly 250 years later, New Jersey once again stands at the front lines of an American crisis, and I remain firm in the belief that it is our responsibility once again to lead this great nation.

So this weekend, I hope you and your family enjoy some holiday festivities. And I hope you’re ready to come back on Monday and keep fighting for the country and state we love. Happy 4th!

Sincerely,

-Mikie
