Legislative Update

Dear Friends and Neighbors,

Happy Independence Day!

As we come together to celebrate the Fourth of July, I want to take a moment to send warm wishes your way and reflect on what this day truly means.

Two hundred and forty-nine years ago, a group of brave men signed a declaration that changed the world. They stood up to tyranny and boldly declared that all people are created equal, endowed by their Creator with unalienable rights—life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness! That powerful idea has guided our country ever since, through times of trial and triumph alike.

In that same spirit, I wanted to share a few updates with you—highlighting some new laws that took effect on July 1:

*Feel Free to Hydrate!*
Going to a concert or public event with over 100 people? You will now receive free water (yes, free!). You are also free to bring in a sealed or empty water bottle to any event. Hydration nation, activated!

*Is Your Young Son or Daughter the Next Internet Celebrity?*

If kids are featured in monetized social media content, they must now be paid and their earnings saved in a trust. Because childhood stardom shouldn’t come without safeguards—or a savings account.

*$26 Billion to Schools*
That’s right—nearly $26 billion is heading to Minnesota classrooms. More resources for students, support for teachers, and new pathways to build a more focused and effective workforce. There’s also $100 million to make sure hourly school staff—like paraprofessionals and bus drivers—don’t get left behind during summer break. We also fought to keep non-public school support in place—and won a victory for educational freedom.

*Permanent Bass Season*
For the first time ever, you can fish for bass year-round in Minnesota. Our lakes are open. The fish are nervous. (You're welcome.)

*Public Safety Gets a Boost*
New laws include tougher penalties for those who assault firefighters, better tools to fight wage theft, and protections for kids exposed to fentanyl. Plus, we’re starting the four-year phaseout of the Stillwater prison and investing in mental health services within the justice system.

*Less Government, No Nonsense*
From new oversight of public funds to fraud prevention reforms, we’re tightening the screws on waste and making your government more lean to work smarter—not harder.

*Yes, We Have a State Fossil Now*
Say hello to Castoroides Ohioensis, Minnesota’s newly crowned official fossil. It’s a giant, prehistoric beaver—and if that doesn’t scream “state pride,” I don’t know what does.

This is just a taste of what’s new in Minnesota law. If you’re curious (or just enjoy reading about legislation while sipping your morning coffee), you can browse the full list [here] [ [link removed] ].

Happy Independence Day, Friends!
1

Today, as we honor the birth of our nation, let’s also remember those who have defended her—soldiers, veterans, peace officers, first responders, and everyday Americans who serve in big and small ways to keep our communities strong and free. Their courage reminds us that freedom isn’t something we can take for granted—it’s something we must protect and pass on to the next generation. America is not perfect—but she is good, and she is worth believing in.

Whether you’re attending a local parade, watching fireworks light up the night sky, or simply enjoying time with the people you love, I hope this holiday fills you with gratitude and pride for this land we call home.

Happy Independence Day. Let freedom ring!

Sincerely,

Representative Steve Gander

Minnesota House of Representatives, District 1B
