This Independence Day, we celebrate the founding ideals and unending courage of the Americans who signed the Declaration of Independence 249 years ago today. It is a cause for celebration every year, of course. This year, the words of our Declaration resonate as much as ever, and are essential to remember.
As the events of this year have unfolded, we are reminded of the courage, the faith, and the patriotism of our founders, as we find that we are in the streets ourselves to make clear once again that Americans want no kings.
Today, it is useful for all of us to review the entire Declaration, including the part that guides our work:
“We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty, and the pursuit of Happiness. That to secure these rights, Governments are instituted among Men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed….
“[W]hen a long train of abuses and usurpations, pursuing invariably the same Object evinces a design to reduce them under absolute Despotism, it is their right, it is their duty, to throw off such Government, and to provide new Guards for their future security.”
That sentiment inspires the work before us: To send to Washington in 2027 a new Congress that will not betray our values and ideals, that will not undermine our Constitution, and that will not bend the knee to a leader who demands absolute fealty and absolute power.
Generations of Americans have fought, struggled, and sacrificed to secure our freedom, to make our union more perfect, and to expand the promise of our Declaration to every person in this country. And we must do that now.
Our campaign has always been about making the vision and the promise of our Declaration of Independence a reality for all Americans. Today, I am celebrating the great patriots who brought us to this day, who have fought to preserve it, and who are fighting today to protect our progress and move us forward. And that includes everyone on #TeamLizzie. Happy Fourth!
