** The Father Effect
------------------------------------------------------------
Eagle Forum has long advocated for the preservation of the nuclear family. As our founder Phyllis Schlafly said ([link removed]) :
“The nuclear family is essential to have an economic structure of limited government because, without it, the government moves in to provide what the family would have done for itself. There are now 79 separate programs handing out taxpayers’ cash and valuable benefits totaling nearly a trillion dollars annually.”
There is no doubt that the number of programs and dollars has risen in more recent years at both the federal and state level. And, the long-term consequences on our society have run rampant. 2017 Census Bureau Data showed there are 19.7 million homes ([link removed]) without a father. That’s 1 in 4 homes, inclusive of all ethnicities and races. National Kids Count data indicates that in 2018, 65% of black children, 53% of Native American, 41% of Latino, and 24% of non-Hispanic White children live in single-parent families in America ([link removed]) .
We know that children with present fathers thrive. And, in this episode of Engage with Eagle Forum we interviewed DJ Jordan to further expand this point. Jordan was born and raised in Virginia by his parents, who both escaped poverty through family commitment, education, entrepreneurship, and hard work. Jordan began working in broadcast journalism and eventually moved over to Capitol Hill where he served in numerous positions and as Communications Director for Senator James Lankford of Oklahoma. At that time, Jordan was the only African American Communications Director in the U.S. Senate. He now works for a PR firm in Alexandria, Virginia, and in 2019, narrowly lost a race for the Virginia House of Delegates. Most importantly, Jordan is a husband and foster and adoptive dad. He and his wife Glorya have four children.
[link removed] shares his insights with Engage on being a good dad and some of the root causes contributing to fatherless homes in the black community. As his wife Glorya said of him:
“As an engaged father, he shows our kids that true greatness is not in titles & wealth, but to know & follow God, love & protect your family, & physically care for vulnerable people around you. As a fierce advocate for justice, he gives a megaphone to the marginalized because fighting for them is the right thing to do for humanity. He is precisely the kind of father I would want every kid to have & I am so very grateful to God that my kids get to call him their Dad.”
