Herbert,
On this day 249 years ago, the 13 American colonies voted to declare independence from Great Britain. No monarchies, they said. No crowns. No thrones.
It was the original “no kings” day.
Today especially -- but everyday -- we continue the work and the fight to maintain the democratic principles upon which our nation was founded. We'll fight to defend our civil liberties, a free and open press and fair elections. We'll defend our system of checks and balances created by three separate but equal branches of government.
As we celebrate this 4th of July with cookouts, fireworks and parades, let’s take a moment to remember our forefathers, who fought for the freedoms that are still on the line. Let’s recommit to staying in the fight, now and in the days, weeks and months ahead. I’ll be with you.
I wish you and your family a happy 4th.
