Lily Allen

** Lily Allen says she “can’t remember” how many abortions she’s had
------------------------------------------------------------

Singer Lily Allen has disclosed that she “can’t remember” how many abortions she has had.

In a podcast interview with her friend Miquita Oliver, Allen singing to the tune of Frank Sinatra’s My Way said: “Abortions I’ve had a few... but then again... I can’t remember exactly how many”.

Laughing, she said: “I can’t remember. I think maybe like, I want to say four or five.” Allen then went on to talk about how she found it “romantic” when an ex-boyfriend offered to pay for one of the abortions.

Allen, who has two children (aged 13 and 11) told Oliver that it “irritates” her having to defend the abortions and that the decision to opt for abortion is entirely up to her, saying: “Just: ‘I don’t want a f***ing baby right now.’ Literally: ‘Don’t want a baby’ is enough reason.”

While Allen has to take responsibility for her actions and comments, the crass and disrespectful way she talks about unborn human life is a symptom of a society that prioritises convenience over respect for life, encouraged by a political class focussed on self-interest over principle. Many of the political figures who might decry the insensitivity of Allen’s remarks are the very ones who helped create the culture that celebrates and normalises such thinking.

The way some now talk about abortion - with chilling detachment - is making others pause, rethink their views, and wonder how we got here as a society. It’s a small but meaningful silver lining in the midst of what’s happening.

Ireland AM presenters Tommy Bowe and Muireann O’Connell

** PLC files official complaint with Virgin Media over programme joking about abortion
------------------------------------------------------------

In last week’s Vital Signs, we covered the interview aired on 24 June by Ireland AM where presenters, Muireann O’Connell and Tommy Bowe, joked and laughed with comedian Katie Boyle about her abortion experience in the US and how Boyle is using comedy to “break the stigma” surrounding the issue. The programme also featured historical inaccuracies about St Brigid and abortion that many would find deeply offensive.

In its formal complaint to Virgin Media, that PLC states that in the interests of fairness and rectifying the situation, Ireland AM should provide an opportunity to a woman who regrets her abortion to come on the programme and tell her story. The PLC points out that Ireland AM has a duty to treat a contentious issue like abortion with fairness in accordance with Section 39(1)(b)-(c) of the Broadcasting Act 2009.

Over the past week, the PLC’s social media posts about the Ireland AM segment have generated a strong public response. The high level of engagement reflects genuine concern about Virgin Media’s decision to air a segment that treated abortion in a lighthearted manner. The public’s disgust is both widespread and entirely justified.

Those wishing to register their concern with Ireland AM should email them directly at [email protected]. Do so today or over the next few days in order not to miss the 30 day deadline. Complaints must first be made to the broadcaster before they can be considered at a later stage by the state media regulator, Coimisiún na Meán.

Senator Keogan calls for legal safeguards for unborn victims of violence

Speaking in the Seanad on Tuesday, Senator Sharon Keogan raised the issue of violence against pregnant women. Her remarks were particularly relevant in light of the horrific murder of Sarah Montgomery, the 27-year-old mother of two who was murdered in Donaghadee last Friday, along with her unborn baby (34 weeks gestation).

Senator Keogan outlined how there are two victims in this case, Ms Montgomery and her unborn baby. She acknowledged how the progressing Pregnancy Loss (Miscellaneous Provisions) Bill 2025 has accounted for the profound loss experienced by families whose babies die before the 24-week threshold for stillborn registration, and outlined that there is a gap in Irish law when it comes to recognising unborn victims of violence.

“We must now ask, where is the legal protection for the unborn victims of violence? When a pregnant woman is attacked and her unborn child dies as a result, our laws do not treat that as a loss of a human life. This is a moral and legal failing. I intend to support any legislation to address this gap because justice must be done, not just for the women who suffer but for the unborn children who die unseen and unaccounted for”, Senator Keogan said.

Legal protection is afforded to unborn victims of violence in several jurisdictions. Today, 37 states have enacted foetal homicide laws, and 29 of these states protect the unborn child beginning at conception.

Planned Parenthood claims to care about women, but this is what real support looks like!

Planned Parenthood, America’s largest abortion provider, presents itself as a compassionately for women facing unplanned pregnancies. But in reality, its focus is overwhelmingly on abortion, offering no practical support for women who choose to carry their babies to term. The real hands-on help comes from grassroots organisations without political motives, whose only goal is to support women and their unborn babies. This short video is a reminder of the incredible, life-affirming work being done every day by these unsung heroes.
