Today is a sad day. Republicans voted to pass Trump’s “big, beautiful bill” to cut health care for millions of Americans. I voted no, but Democrats simply didn’t have enough votes to stop it.
I’ve been trying to wrap my head around this bill, and the main thing that keeps coming up is the cruelty within it. Taking healthcare away from poor people in order to give massive tax breaks to the richest 1%? There’s no other word for it.
In moments like this, I think about my brother, David. He was born with a pre-existing condition, and our family wouldn’t have been able to afford his care if we didn’t have my dad’s health insurance.
I ran for Congress for David, and for the tens of thousands of families in my community who were going to lose health care.
In 2017, the last time Trump tried to rip health care away from millions of people, we were able to stop him, thanks to Senator McCain’s infamous thumbs down vote. I’m devastated that this time none of my Republican colleagues had the same courage. Instead, JD Vance smiled as he cast the deciding vote.
This is why elections matter. And it’s why Democrats need to stop playing nice and need to ACTUALLY HOLD REPUBLICANS ACCOUNTABLE. Every single voter needs to know who cut their health insurance.
With your help, I plan to make sure everyone in my district knows what happened today and who caused it.
