[1]Alex Padilla for Senate

Friends,

Congress just passed one of the worst bills in the history of the United States.

I won’t try to sugarcoat it: the impacts of this bill will be absolutely devastating, particularly to the most vulnerable among us.

It’s going to rip health care coverage away from 17 million Americans, take away food stamps from families who rely on them, raise energy prices and explode the debt by trillions of dollars.

It is a massive theft from the working people of this country to give even more to the already wealthy.

That is the bad news. And it is truly terrible.

But here is the silver lining (and yes there is indeed a silver lining):

Poll after poll shows that this bill is overwhelmingly not what the American people want.

They don’t want the largest cuts to Medicaid benefits ever for working people while the rich get over $1 trillion in new tax breaks.

They don’t want to give ICE the largest budget of any law enforcement agency in the federal government so they can continue to terrorize immigrant communities and build internment camps across the country.

And they certainly don’t want to dismantle renewable energy programs when we see every day the devastating impacts of climate change and are about to enter the heart of fire season here in California.

Friends, I understand the urge to log off, to look away and hope everything turns out ok for you and your family. But in these incredibly difficult times, that is simply not an option.

For the sake of our children and the future we want them to inherit, we have to keep fighting. So even as we fight against the impacts of this bill, we must also make sure Republicans pay a political price for harming their constituents.

We have to vote them out at the ballot box — we have to make it clear that we won’t forget how they voted to eliminate their health care and jack up their energy bills — all to give tax breaks to the wealthiest people in the country.

If you can afford it, please chip in to help fight back and flip the Senate blue.

Thank you for staying in the fight.

Alex
