House Republicans have passed their cruel, immoral, disastrous budget.
House Republicans have voted to kick millions of people off their health insurance.
House Republicans have voted to make millions more Americans go hungry.
They wanted to pass this bill in the middle of the night — sneaking around and hiding from the public because they *know* how unpopular and devastating it is. We didn’t let them do that, and I’m glad they were forced to put their names on this legislation in broad daylight for everyone to see.
So how did we get here? And to answer a question I know some may be wondering, why didn’t Democrats stop this from passing?
The reality is that we tried really, really hard. We pushed behind the scenes, we negotiated, we did everything we could to try to make our Republican colleagues understand the real human consequences of what they’re doing.
Despite hearing all of that, despite hearing from their constituents, House Republicans have the majority, and they voted to pass this horrible bill.
Why? Because they’re more scared of Donald Trump than they are of their constituents and voters.
Because they want to give their campaign donors, billionaires, and corporations a tax break.
And because it turns out you can’t force someone to care about other people.
Look, I took the red eye to D.C. two nights ago. Last night I slept on my couch in my office. And I would go 10, 20, 30 more nights without sleeping to protect the American people — that’s what our job is. And it’s a damn shame that my Republican colleagues can’t see that.
I’ll leave you with this final thought: It is abundantly clear that if we have any hope of passing legislation that will help people in this country and blocking more terrible legislation, we absolutely must win back a Democratic majority in the House next year.
I am in this fight to win, and I will never stop working to improve my constituents’ lives and to elect more strong Democratic leaders who will do the same.
I’m glad to have you by my side in this. I hope you’re able to enjoy some time with loved ones this holiday weekend.
Sincerely,
Sara
