Today, Republicans forced through a cruel and reckless piece of legislation.
It slashes Medicaid, food assistance, and health care access — all while handing out tax breaks and increasing the national deficit. The Congressional Budget Office estimates that over 17 million Americans, including 245,000 Marylanders, will lose their health care by 2034 under this law.
These are not just numbers. These are our neighbors, our seniors, our children. This bill will benefit wealthy Americans now — and pass the buck and the bill to my generation and my children’s generation.
This bill threatens the foundation of public health and economic stability across our state. It creates red tape that makes it harder for people to maintain their healthcare, imposes burdensome new rules on SNAP recipients, and leaves states like ours scrambling to fill massive funding gaps we didn’t create.
As Comptroller, I know firsthand how much Maryland relies on stable federal partnerships to support everything from health care and education to clean energy and local jobs. This law undermines those partnerships and shifts the burden to state governments that are already stretched thin.
I’m incredibly proud of Maryland’s Democratic congressional delegation. Every single one of them voted against this heartless legislation. And while Republicans had the votes today, this story is not over.
The damage done today is real. But so is our resolve to fight back and create a government that puts people first.
With determination — thank you for all YOU do.
My best,
