Supreme Court restores parental opt-outs for Pride Storybooks
|

|
g Independence Day with another huge win for religious freedom right after our Catholic Charities victory earlier this month.
The Supreme Court ruled 6-3 that parents have the right to opt their children out of storybooks that push one-sided ideology on gender and sexuality. In Mahmoud v. Taylor, the Montgomery County Board of Education took away parental notice and opt-outs for storybooks that celebrate gender transitioning, pride parades, and pronoun preferences with kids as young as three and four. The instructions for these lessons encouraged telling children that doctors “guess” gender at birth and that gender is fluid like the weather. The parents whose children were required to be taught these stories weren’t asking that the books be removed. They were asking for notification and the ability to opt out, a right afforded them on every other subject but this one.
Becket represents a diverse coalition of religious parents, including Muslims, Christians, and Jews, who argued that parents have the right to direct the moral and religious upbringing of their children. (Watch this short video to learn more.)

All this work defending religious liberty and winning cases on behalf of our courageous clients is made possible through the generous contributions of supporters like you. The Fourth of July is a time for celebrating the freedoms that make America great. Our commitment to religious liberty was an early and essential part of the American story. Every Fourth of July, we commemorate America’s founding declaration—that God gave us our rights of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness, and that no just government can take them away.
This Fourth of July, would you consider honoring America by donating to Becket’s work to defend America’s first freedom? We can only protect religious liberty because of the faithful contributions from donors like you, and we are grateful for that support.
