Independence Day and our Democratic Principles
As we celebrate Fourth of July, we must remember that when our founding fathers signed the Declaration of Independence 249 years ago, they knew that America should not and would not be a nation ruled by a king or an authoritarian president. Most importantly, they established the values that our great nation was founded upon – freedom, democracy, liberty and justice for all.
These principles are unfortunately under threat right now by President Trump, who has repeatedly broken the law, disregarded the will of Congress, and ignored legally binding orders from judges. Our founding fathers would be shocked by Trump’s disrespect for the system of checks and balances enshrined in our constitution and deeply disappointed in the Congressional Republicans’ failure to hold the President accountable. This year, we all must recommit ourselves to the hard work of protecting and preserving the vision they had for the United States of America – a nation governed by the people, for the people.
This weekend is a time to celebrate our great nation. Whether you are marching in a parade, enjoying the Jersey Shore, or watching fireworks in your hometown, I hope you have a happy Fourth!
