17 million will lose healthcare.
Friend, moments ago, the U.S. House passed a devastating budget reconciliation bill that will gut Medicaid. As a result, many community hospitals will close, addiction treatment options will be reduced, and healthcare will be taken away from 17 million people — all just to fund tax breaks for billionaires. The bill now goes to President Trump who has vowed to sign it into law as soon as possible.
This is one of the darkest moments in our country that will have consequences for all Americans — the biggest rollback of healthcare and the social safety net in our history. This disastrous bill cuts more than $1 trillion from Medicaid, the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), and other essential services that have helped keep Americans healthy and alive.
Recent declines in overdose show that access to treatment, naloxone, and other health services — often through programs like Medicaid — keep people alive and on a path towards recovery. Passage of this bill will cost lives. More of our loved ones will be lost to overdose. And more Americans will not have access to care.
Congress rushed this bill through despite the fact that it is deeply unpopular among most Americans who have been clear about wanting better healthcare and quality of life. Most Republicans made a conscious choice to cave to pressure from President Trump to pass this cruel policy rather than listen to the will of the people they swore to serve.
We are grateful for our thousands of supporters like you who spoke out in opposition. It’s clear we have a long road ahead and we need you to keep standing by our side.
Together, we must continue holding lawmakers accountable for putting lives in jeopardy, including people who use drugs and struggle with addiction. And we must continue holding the line on what we are fighting for: a world where we take care of each other, so everyone has what they need to lead full, healthy, and joyful lives.
Americans from across the country have felt the devastating impact of addiction, overdose, and fentanyl on our loved ones. At the Drug Policy Alliance, we remain committed to our fight for health-based approaches that save lives, prevent overdose, increase access to treatment, and address the root causes of addiction.
Addiction isn’t just about drugs — it’s about pain, instability, and survival. For many people, mental health struggles are at the root of drug use. Families can’t afford food. Rents are too high. Job opportunities are scarce. People are doing whatever they can to get through the day. Sometimes, that means turning to drugs to numb the pain.
Addiction is a symptom of deeper struggles, so we must treat the root — not just the surface. The U.S. government needs to focus on investing in affordable housing and stable jobs. And for those struggling with addiction right now, making care available quickly and on-demand for those seeking it.
So many Americans are already struggling. Trump’s budget bill will just make surviving even harder for our families, friends, neighbors, and communities… for all of us. Despite this shameful setback, we must always remember that we have the power to change course. Americans want to be healthy, safe, and stable. Even though our leaders have let us down today, we will be in this fight for the long haul to get what we need to survive and thrive.
With you,
