“House Republicans just passed what is without question the worst tax and spending bill in modern American history. Full stop.
“For months, New Dems have joined the American people — who overwhelmingly oppose this legislation — fighting, imploring and even pleading with Republicans to recognize the obvious and stop this trainwreck. Instead, Congressional Republicans almost unanimously turned their backs on hardworking Americans, once again hiding in the darkness of night.
“There’s no other way to put it: this extreme package is the largest transfer of wealth from the working class to the ultra-rich our nation has ever seen. It will rip healthcare away from 17 million Americans and food assistance from tens of millions more, including millions of children. It will raise the price of everything from electricity to groceries, destroy millions of jobs, and take money out of the pockets of working and middle-class families. The number of Americans who will lose their health insurance due to $1 trillion of health care cuts, including $793 billion from Medicaid and $268 billion from the ACA Marketplaces – the largest cuts to federal support for health programs in the nation’s history.

The number of SNAP recipients who will be at risk of losing their benefits due to the $300 billion in cuts to nutrition assistance in the bill. This is 1 out of every 8 SNAP recipients. All 40 million SNAP recipients – 2 in 5 of which are children – will see their benefits slashed and costs rise.

Congresswoman Jahana Hayes (CT-05) introduced an amendment to safeguard SNAP and prevent the disastrous cuts to the program included in Subtitle A of Title I of the bill.
Congresswoman Emilia Sykes (OH-13) introduced an amendment to strike all of the harmful Medicaid changes in the bill and protect healthcare for tens of millions of Americans.
Congresswoman Chrissy Houlahan (PA-06) and Congressman Greg Stanton (AZ-04) introduced an amendment to stop implementation of the bill if it raises taxes or the cost of living for Americans making less than $400,000 or raises home electricity costs.
Congresswoman Jennifer McClellan (VA-04) and Congressman Marc Veasey (TX-33) introduced an amendment to strike Section 71115 and eliminate a provision that cuts provider taxes, an essential funding mechanism to fund Medicaid expansion.
Congresswoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz (FL-25) and Congressman Josh Gottheimer (NJ-05) introduced an amendment to add a subsection requiring the Secretary of HHS to certify in writing that the reductions and rescissions will not affect cancer survivors currently on Medicaid or Medicare.
Congressman Troy Carter (LA-02) introduced an amendment that would require 100 percent of any reduction in state expenditures resulting from reduced Medicaid enrollment to be reinvested back into the program.
Congresswoman Sarah Elfreth (MD-03) introduced an amendment to increase the amount educators are able to deduct from their taxes when paying out-of-pocket for school supplies.
Congressman Josh Riley (NY-19) and Congressman Greg Landsman (OH-01) introduced an amendment to prohibit Medicaid Provider Taxes from being lowered in states where rural hospitals would be negatively impacted.
