Dear SPUC supporter,
As you know, on Tuesday 17th June, MPs voted to expand our already horrific abortion laws even further. Abortion advocates in Parliament hijacked the Government’s Crime and Policing Bill by tabling amendments to remove abortion from the criminal law.
While Stella Creasy’s amendment decriminalising abortion entirely was not voted on, the proposal in the name of Tonia Antoniazzi MP was approved by 379 votes to 137. This amendment seeks to change criminal law so that “no offence is committed by a woman acting in relation to her own pregnancy” at any gestation. This means that a woman who induced her abortion at home using pills (or any other method) at any stage of pregnancy, including just before natural birth, would not commit a crime.
What next?
The Crime and Policing Bill has now passed to the House of Lords for debate and scrutiny. As NC1 was incorporated into the Bill, the clause on decriminalising abortion is now Clause 191 of the Crime and Policing Bill. There will be opportunities for Peers to debate Clause 191 and to suggest changes to it – or even to reject it altogether.
A date for the Lords stages of the Bill has not yet been announced, but is likely to be in the next few months. We need to use this time to expose the horrific policy that MPs have voted for.
Write to Lords
Please write to members of the House of Lords and ask them to fight the extreme abortion up to birth amendment. This was not in any manifesto. It was passed after just 43 minutes backbench debate, with very little notice. The public did not know this was coming – and are outraged that MPs have voted through this barbaric policy. The Lords can and must fight back.
To make this easier for you, we have created an online tool for contacting members of the House of Lords. It will generate a Peer at random for you to write to, and bring up an editable template. Once you have finished your letter, it will be emailed to you to print off and send to the Peer by post. This is an extra step to what you might be used to, but a very necessary one. Paper letters are always more impactful than emails, and many Peers do not have publicly available email addresses. Please take the take to send a physical letter to Members of the House of Lords.
Please also take the time to edit the template and put it in your own words, voicing your own concerns. An updated briefing on the decriminalisation amendment is available on the webpage, which you can refer to.

You can contact as many Peers as you like (but send the letters in separate envelopes).
Thank you for campaigning with us. And for those wondering, yes, we’ll have similar resources to help you write to Lords about the assisted suicide bill!
With best wishes,
Alithea Williams
