Trump’s Big Beautiful Bill is anything but beautiful. In reality, it’s a price hike on New Jersey families. From skyrocketing healthcare premiums to higher utility bills and mortgage rates, this bill will affect every aspect of our day-to-day lives. It also guts Medicaid and food assistance programs, all to pay for tax breaks for billionaires. All of our Democratic leaders in the House and Senate voted no on this legislation while Congressmen Tom Kean Jr., Jeff Van Drew, and Chris Smith all bent a knee to Trump and voted yes. They put their loyalty to Trump over New Jersey families. And if you’re wondering where Jack Ciattarelli stands on this, he’s all in for it.

This week’s Chairman’s Corner will unpack what’s in this bill and its impact on New Jersey. Trump and his loyalists in Congress ramming through their harmful agenda only underscores how critical it is that we elect a governor who will fight to lower costs and protect our healthcare. That leader is Mikie Sherrill.

Trump made a lot of promises on the campaign trail to bring down costs. Now he’s in office giving tax breaks to billionaires and forcing New Jersey families to pay for it. Republicans like Jack Ciattarelli will try to paint a better picture of what this bill does but the numbers don’t lie. 

Here’s the truth on Trump’s Price Hike Bill:

• Utility costs: Increase electricity bills by 16%, totaling $240/year more for NJ families by 2030.

• Monthly mortgage payments: Average-priced NJ homes will see a $150/month hike.

• Healthcare premiums: 450,000 New Jerseyans on the ACA will face premiums doubling, costing families an additional $4,200/year.

• Health insurance & food assistance: 410,000 NJ residents will lose their health insurance, and 185,000 will lose nutrition assistance.

• Impact on NJ budget: Cuts $3.6 billion in federal health funding for NJ, slashing over 50% of the state’s FY26 budget surplus. Additionally, counties will see a $120 million reduction in SNAP funding.

• SALT Tax: The reinstatement of the SALT cap will hike taxes on New Jerseyans by $40 billion.

• Deficit: The Senate version of the bill will add $3.3 trillion to the deficit over the next decade.

These numbers go beyond just statistics. They represent real, everyday costs that will make life harder for families across our state. This is the price of Trump’s agenda, and it’s too damn high to pay.  

In the face of this disastrous budget, Mikie Sherrill is standing strong. Not only is she voting 'No' on this bill, but she’s also clearly outlining the devastating consequences if it moves forward. Here is her statement:

“This bill, supported by Donald Trump and his lackey Jack Ciattarelli, will raise costs, kill jobs, and explode the deficit. More than 400,000 people here will lose their health insurance, our utility prices will skyrocket, and mortgage rates will increase. And to underscore the cruelty, they’re cutting food assistance for children to give tax cuts to billionaires and big oil. The bill even reinstates the Republicans’ punishing SALT cap, which was set to expire this year. It’s an unfair double-tax on New Jerseyans.

Despite the horrific price increases, the vast majority of Senate Republicans lacked the courage to do the right thing and vote no. We see that same cowardice in Jack, who chooses Trump over New Jersey every time, and can’t name a single issue on which they disagree. Supporting a bill this devastating for New Jersey demonstrates incompetence and callousness at the highest level — a choice that proves he is both too partisan and too ill-informed to lead our state. 

I will be voting no on this bill and visiting and listening to New Jerseyans who will be hurt by this destructive Trump/Ciattarelli MAGA agenda.”

Trump’s Price Hike Bill guts healthcare for New Jerseyans, jacks up our energy prices, and balloons the national deficit.
