Now that we are halfway through the year, I wanted to reach out and share the impact supporters like you have made on the lives of women and girls around the world:
You have helped us achieve amazing results for millions of women and girls living through conflict and humanitarian crises.
Amid mass U.S. funding cuts impacting UNFPA and many humanitarian relief organizations, supporters like you have opened your hearts to support the women and girls who need it most. Last year, your support:
đźź prevented 39,000 maternal deaths
đźź saved 290,000 girls from FGM
đźź reached 14.3 million women and young people with sexual and reproductive health services
When the U.S. terminated all funding and grants for UNFPA, the future of our lifesaving services in areas where they’re needed most was suddenly uncertain.
This included sexual and reproductive health services for displaced populations in Gaza. Displaced women like Maysa , who have little to no access to basic reproductive services and supplies, depend on UNFPA’s hygiene kits for things like tampons, pads, and clean underwear.
“When we receive (UNFPA) hygiene kits, it feels like someone finally sees us,” Maysa told us. “They don’t just protect our health, they protect our dignity.”
Funding for emergency lifesaving health services in Ukraine was also terminated. More than 50 of UNFPA’s mobile psychosocial teams in Ukraine were supported by U.S. funding, and funding cuts put them all at risk of closure.
Violence prevention services in Sudan, where the healthcare system is on the brink of collapse and women and girls are facing a nightmare of daily violence, have never been more important. But these services are also facing funding cuts.
Mothers like Sabreen found help and safety at a UNFPA-sponsored clinic in Sudan: “I worry about the cold and not having a proper place to lay my baby. We don’t have a home — we sleep on the floor. A mobile clinic examined me and performed an ultrasound. They treated me kindly ,” she told us.
Despite the many challenges, you helped us continue to bring compassionate, lifesaving care where it was needed most. Your support allowed us to deliver for women and girls no matter what, providing a lifeline for the most vulnerable struggling through humanitarian crises.
Our work is far from finished as needs still persist around the world. Thank you for being there for women and girls in their darkest moments.
Sincerely,
