(LANSING, MICH) As Michiganders celebrate Independence Day, the Michigan Department of Insurance and Financial Services (DIFS) is reminding residents to put safety first—whether they're lighting fireworks, hosting a backyard cookout, or enjoying time on the water. Taking precautions can help avoid accidents, protect loved ones, and reduce the risk of costly insurance claims.
“The Fourth of July is a time for celebrating with friends and family, but it can also be a time when preventable accidents occur,” said *DIFS Director Anita Fox*. “By following some simple safety steps and understanding how your insurance coverage works, you can enjoy the holiday with greater peace of mind.”
To help consumers stay protected, DIFS is sharing the following safety and insurance tips:
*Homeowners Insurance: Grilling, Fireworks, and Hosting Safely*
* *Keep grills at least 10 feet from your home*, deck railings, and overhanging branches.
* *Make sure embers are completely extinguished *before disposing of ashes.
* *Use fireworks away from structures* and only if they are legal in your area. Light one at a time and keep water or a hose nearby.
* *Check your homeowners insurance policy* to understand what’s covered in the event of a fire or injury caused by grilling or fireworks.
* *If you’re hosting guests*, review your policy to see if it includes liability coverage to help protect you if someone is injured on your property.
*Auto, RV, or Motorcycle Insurance: Road Trip and Driving Safety*
* *Inspect your vehicle before heading out*, whether it’s a car, motorcycle, or RV. Check tires, lights, brakes, and fluid levels to avoid breakdowns.
* *Ensure RVs and trailers are properly registered and insured*, especially if they’re being used for camping or long-distance travel.
* *Avoid distractions* like texting or using mobile apps while driving.
* *Check your insurance policy* to ensure your coverage is current and consider whether you need protections like collision or comprehensive coverage in case of an accident, theft, or weather-related damage.
* *Keep your proof of insurance* in your vehicle or accessible through a mobile app in case you need to report a claim while traveling.
*Boat Insurance and Water Safety*
* *Wear a life jacket at all times. *Even strong swimmers are at risk in unpredictable conditions.
* *Never operate a boat under the influence* of drugs or alcohol.
* *Make sure your boat insurance is active* and covers liability, property damage, and medical costs in case of an accident.
* *Know your surroundings.* Stay alert for other boats, swimmers, and no-wake zones.
* *Supervise children at all times.* Drowning can occur in a matter of seconds.
