Dear John,
The Freedom House Executive Board announced last week the selection of Gerardo Berthin and Annie Boyajian to serve as Freedom House’s new presidents. Berthin and Boyajian had served as interim copresidents of Freedom House since January.
“These are defining times for global freedom and democracy,” said Norman Willox, chair of the Freedom House Board of Trustees. “At this critical juncture, Freedom House is proud to be guided by two exceptional leaders who bring decades of experience, a deep and unwavering commitment to nonpartisan integrity, and a bold vision for how Freedom House can safeguard fundamental rights in this new era.”

Political Prisoners Watch: Travel Bans
|
The release of a political prisoner is cause for celebration—yet it does not always result in total freedom. Former political prisoners often face a host of restrictions after release that hinder their safe return to activism, journalism, or human rights defense. A common tool is the imposition of a domestic or international travel ban.
