Email from Wisconsin Institute for Law & Liberty Wisconsin Congressional Maps Marked Safe Last week, a unanimous Wisconsin Supreme Court declined both of the very weak original action petitions seeking to overturn the Wisconsin congressional maps. We applaud our state's justices for making a sound decision on the two redistricting challenges brought before them earlier this year. This decision reinforces the legitimacy of our state's congressional maps and pushes back against radical, out-of-state leftists trying to meddle in Wisconsin. This repeated rejection by the court, including just last year, speaks volumes about the lack of merit in these challenges. WILL Deputy Counsel, Lucas Vebber, stated, "As we explained months ago, any effort to try and redraw our congressional district lines in the middle of a decade like this would face an uphill fight. This is a common sense decision from the court, and a win for the rule of law in Wisconsin." WILL filed non-party briefs in both cases detailing the flaws in the petitions seeking to overturn the maps. Our legal memorandum published in early April explained the legal and practical difficulties any effort to try to get our state’s highest court to redraw the congressional maps would face. WILL Finalists For THREE State Policy Network Awards WILL is proud to announce that it is a finalist in three categories for this year's State Policy Network Awards, including the Bob Williams Award for Most Influential Research and two awards for Communications Excellence. Communications Excellence: WILL is nominated for the Excellence in Storytelling award for sharing the powerful story of Colbey Decker, which exposed Green Bay's race-based special education policies, garnered national attention, and led to a federal civil rights investigation. Listen Here WILL Applauds SCOTUS Ruling to Protect Parental Rights WILL released a statement praising the U.S. Supreme Court’s (SCOTUS) 6–3 ruling in Mahmoud v. Taylor—a landmark parental rights case that confirms parents’ ability to challenge school curricula and potentially other school policies and practices. In its order, SCOTUS specifically stated that the Montgomery County Public Schools practices “unconstitutionally burden the parents’ religious exercise.” WILL believes this case will reshape the legal landscape in parental rights cases because the court’s new “standard” states that a school district policy that “substantially interferes with” or “undermines” the religious beliefs parents want to instill is subject to strict scrutiny. WILL Deputy Counsel, Luke Berg, stated, “This landmark SCOTUS decision establishes clear First Amendment protections for families to practice their faith and opt their kids out of school curriculum when it conflicts with their values. The fight is far from over and SCOTUS has now provided the foundation for parental rights cases to move forward in federal court.” Read More WILL Joins Moms For Liberty Webinar to Discuss SCOTUS Decision On June 30, WILL joined Moms for Liberty for a livestream discussion following the SCOTUS decision in Mahmoud affirming parents' right to "opt out" of controversial classroom instruction on religious grounds. WILL Education Counsel, Cory Brewer, participated in the discussion alongside Moms for Liberty's Scarlett Johnson, and Rosalind Hanson, a plaintiff in the case. The conversation addressed how this SCOTUS decision impacts parents nationwide, especially those in blue states, as they consider their next steps.
