Reflecting the values we fight for.
Dear John,
We are thrilled to announce that Breach Collective staff, and our board, have just ratified our second collective bargaining agreement ([link removed]) ! After leading the way with one of the most progressive first union contracts in the sector in 2023, this cements Breach’s reputation as a living model of worker- and justice-centered nonprofit governance.
Our previous contract provided a bold and solid foundation ([link removed]) , including a 32-hour full-time workweek, 50 vacation days, unlimited sick leave, and a wage-parity clause ensuring the lowest-paid staff earn at least 70% of the highest salary. Now, in response to the evolving needs of a growing organization, staff and board have negotiated a successor contract that not only retains those gains but refines and deepens them.
This second contract builds on our first agreement with several key improvements:
* A cost-of-living adjustment tied to inflation for stipends, ensuring they rise with economic conditions.
* Expanded rest time, including an additional paid week off every winter for full office closure.
* Improved leave policies, including safe leave for employees who have experienced sexual assault, domestic violence, harassment, bias crimes, or stalking.
* Enhanced accountability and work-planning structures, solidifying shared governance principles.
These updates reflect a maturing workplace culture rooted in equity, sustainability, and care.
The ratification of this second contract isn’t just a win for Breach. It’s part of a growing movement to reimagine how workers are treated in the nonprofit sector, and beyond. With this contract, we continue to embody our value of prioritizing justice inside the workplace while fighting for justice in the world. As nonprofit workers across the country undertake unionization campaigns in their workplaces, we hope that Breach’s contract can provide an important model of what’s possible.
If you are a nonprofit worker exploring unionization, Breach’s ongoing journey proves that progressive labor standards and mission-driven advocacy work can thrive hand-in-hand. Check out our Organize Your Organization ([link removed]) project for more guidance on how to unionize your nonprofit.
Solidarity forever!
