President Trump has demanded that Congress send him his budget reconciliation bill — a.ka. the MAGA Murder Bill — by July Fourth — which is Friday. And Republican House Speaker Mike Johnson is determined to move heaven and earth to pass a final version tonight.
Democrats like Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez of New York have been giving floor speeches this afternoon against the bill.
“President Trump had issued some statements throughout this process saying and urging, insisting that this bill does not cut Medicaid,” she said. “… You know, he says he doesn't think I'm too much of a smart person. And I'll tell you one thing. It doesn't take a smart person to know if you're being lied to. President Trump, you're either being lied to or you are lying to the American people.”
But there are holdouts from the House Freedom Caucus. And plenty of Republicans in swing seats nervous about voting to kick millions of people off their health insurance.
There are 29 House districts where Republicans won by 12 points or less in 2024.
Below, district-wide enrollment in Affordable Care Act (ACA) exchange-based Qualified Health Plans (QHPs), ACA Basic Health Plans (BHPs), and Medicaid via ACA expansion are posted in a chart.
Across these 29 districts alone, a total of nearly 2.7 million Americans are at risk of either losing healthcare coverage entirely. And if they don't, they’ll have to deal with MASSIVE premium hikes [ [link removed] ] and/or a MOUNTAIN of paperwork on a regular basis to keep it due to a combination of H.R. 1 (the "One Big Beautiful Bill Act") being implemented, the GOP allowing the Biden-era Inflation Reduction Act subsidies for the Affordable Care Act to expire at the end of this year, and the Trump Administration implementing the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid's recent "Integrity Rule" starting this fall.
There are various estimates for how many people will lose coverage. The Congressional Budget Office projects 16 to 17 million, while Wakely Consulting's projection is up to 14 million QHPs/BHPs alone and up to 22 million w/the CBO's Medicaid number added. At this point, it's a moving target and again, even those who don't technically lose coverage entirely will still be devastated by massive cost increases and/or red tape.
The bottom line is that nationally, all 46 million Americans with coverage via the ACA are at risk.
