Hi friends, I’ll make this quick:
If you already know how devastating the GOP budget will be if it’s signed into law, you can skip the rest of this email and hit the phones: Dial (202) 224-3121 – the Capitol switchboard – right now and register your strong opposition to this bill.
This bill could come up for a vote in a matter of hours. The procedural votes for it have already started — so if you can make calls, the time is now.
If you have a Republican representative, it’s extra important to call them! If not, you can ask to speak to one of the members who is reportedly on the fence about which way to vote:
- Rep. Rob Bresnahan (PA)
- Rep. Tim Burchett (TN)
- Rep. Eli Crane (AZ)
- Rep. Chuck Edwards (NC)
- Rep. Brian Fitzpatrick (PA)
- Rep. Jen Kiggans (VA)
- Rep. Ralph Norman (SC)
- Rep. Chip Roy (TX)
- Rep. Keith Self (TX)
- Rep. David Valadao (CA)
If you don’t yet know about the disaster that is this GOP budget legislation, let me give you a few highlights:
This bill steals from poor and working-class people to enrich the wealthiest people in the country even further.
Americans who are in the lowest earning bracket would see their incomes and federal benefits (like Medicaid and SNAP) cut by nearly 4% a year, while the wealthiest 10% would get a 2.3% increase in after-tax income.
For people in our community who are experiencing poverty – who are barely keeping things afloat – these cuts will be devastating.
This is all while adding trillions of dollars to the federal deficit – something Republicans have historically cared about *so much* that it was the cornerstone of their platform for decades. (Give me a break.)
So why is the GOP so set on pushing this through? To give trillions of dollars in tax breaks to billionaires and massive corporations – because Donald Trump wants to.
This bill will push millions of people off of their health insurance, raise everyone else’s premiums, and close clinics, nursing homes, and hospitals. People will go hungry, and people will die unnecessary deaths.
And another thing! This isn’t being talked about much, but this bill also increases funding for Trump’s efforts to militarize our communities and terrorize our neighbors.
Now that the budget bill is back in the House, I’m going to do everything I can to minimize its harm (and hopefully stop it altogether). But Republicans need to hear from all of us. Will you call the U.S. House switchboard at (202) 224-3121 and register your opposition to this cruel and unjust budget?
Then forward this email to friends and family who will speak out, too. Public pressure is one of our key levers of power, and we’ve seen over and over that it works – so we can’t let up now.
Thanks for reading – more to come.
–Sara
