Dear John,
In the last three weeks, over 4,000 national guard troops and 700 marines have been deployed by the federal government to join ICE in kidnapping our friends, family, and neighbors from sidewalks, community centers, homes, and workplaces. These sweeps have taken over 1,600 people and spread terror through our communities, with thousands more missing work, medical appointments, and graduation celebrations in order to shelter at home.
Los Angeles is under siege. To fight back, we need to scale up our efforts to build community power, and that power starts with knowing our rights.
Starting today, July 2nd, LAANE is pivoting organizers, researchers, communicators, and support staff across our campaigns for an all-out, eight-week, countywide, multi-industry outreach program. Utilizing the same framework as our political and electoral canvassing programs, we plan to reach 10,000 Angelenos a week, providing them with Know Your Rights information. We’re going to skill up 50 Know Your Rights trainers and build an emergency on-call cohort that can provide trainings across LA County. And we’re going to talk to 7,000 employers about their rights and the best ways to protect workers and customers.
No one can afford to sit this out. Can you join us?
Donate to help put a canvasser in the field and spread the word. And stay tuned for opportunities to volunteer to educate community members and small businesses on their rights in your own neighborhood.
As an Angeleno, I can’t think of a more difficult past three weeks. But we have to come together and support each other in profound ways, now more than ever. Los Angeles is ours to protect - let’s do it together.
