ACTION: Tell Congress - Axe the 45Q Tax Credit from the Budget Bill.
John --
The U.S. Senate voted today to pass the big... budget reconciliation bill, but with even more handouts to industry than the original bill that passed in the House last month -- including an even more generous 45Q tax credit giveaway for industry's carbon capture & storage (CCS) boondoggle.
Despite calls from landowners and advocates to axe the 45Q tax credit entirely, the Senate version just made it as profitable to to use CO2 to extract oil from wells via "Enhanced Oil Recovery" as it is to bury and sequester the CO2 in underground waste dumps. [1]
If you needed more evidence that "carbon capture" is just a ploy by Big Oil to keep drilling and polluting forever, and not just an unproven climate solution that relies on eminent domain to force landowners to host risky pipelines and endanger public drinking water aquifers, your Senators just delivered.
The bill now moves back to the House, where we have a chance now to demand that our Reps. reject the bill and the 45Q tax credit giveaway for carbon capture.
Last time around, our actions made a measurable, direct impact: Rep. Dusty Johnson (R-S.D.) and Sen. Majority Leader John Thune (R-S.D.) both reportedly intervened after hearing from us to urge the removal of dangerous fast-track permitting and a federal eminent domain land grab. [2,3]
ACTION: Tell Congress - Axe the 45Q Tax Credit from the Budget Bill.
Thanks for standing with us.
