Dear MoveOn member,
We are staring down a future where generations of U.S.-born children are denied citizenship simply because of their ZIP code or whether their families can afford a lawyer.
The Supreme Court’s decision to side with Trump last Friday gave him the green light to end birthright citizenship—our constitutional right under the 14th Amendment that affirms that everyone in the U.S. is automatically a citizen.1
Trump is going after U.S.-born children, putting their citizenship in question, and leaving parents terrified that their kids could be detained, deported, or denied basic legal rights in the only country they've ever known. Click here to tell your member of Congress that they must protect our children’s rights and vote NO on any attempt to strip birthright citizenship.
While class-action lawsuits have been filed in response to continue the fight back against this dangerous rollback of our constitutional rights at the federal court level, Republican members of Congress are mounting an offensive of their own on the Hill.2 Hours after SCOTUS’s decision on Friday, Representative Andy Barr introduced a constitutional amendment ending birthright citizenship.3
Trump and his allies in Congress are determined to strip away birthright citizenship so they can rewrite who gets to be an American and who deserves legal rights and protection. But make no mistake: Any attempt to erase this constitutional right must go through Congress, and every member must be held accountable to defend our rights.
Will you write a letter to your members of Congress demanding they vote NO on any attempt, whether through the courts or through legislation, to end birthright citizenship?
John, the consequences of ending birthright citizenship can not be understated. If Trump’s executive order is approved by Congress, children and infants in 28 states could be rendered stateless, stripped of their basic legal rights, and left vulnerable to deportation.
4 It is now up to Congress to stop this nightmare from becoming reality by voting NO on any attempt to end birthright citizenship.
Every member of Congress needs to hear from us NOW. We can't allow a future in which children grow up stateless—denied access to health care, social services, and legal protections—to become reality. Write a letter to your representatives today and demand they vote NO on any attempt—whether through Republican-introduced legislation or federal court decisions—to end birthright citizenship.
Thanks for all you do.
