Road Striping Season Underway
"(Port Orchard, WA)" - Each year between May and October, Kitsap County Public Works performs mobile road striping on over 900 miles of roads to maintain visibility and safety. This work uses reflective paint applied by slow-moving equipment and is scheduled during dry weather and temperatures above 50°F.
*What to Expect:*
* Striping trucks apply paint in motion and place cones to mark wet paint areas
* Advance signage is not required due to the mobile nature of the operation
* Paint typically dries within minutes, but driving over wet paint can damage vehicles and obscure lane markings
*Vehicle Damage Policy:
*Kitsap County does not accept liability or provide reimbursement for paint-related vehicle damage resulting from driving through wet striping zones. This includes damage to tires, wheels, undercarriages, or transferred paint on driveways and other surfaces.
*How to Avoid Paint Damage:*
* Do not drive over or through coned-off or freshly painted lines
* Remain alert for striping vehicles, cones, and pilot cars
* Do not pass paint crews or pilot vehicles
* Obey all traffic control directions in striping zones
Driving on painted lines—wet or dry—is prohibited under RCW 46.61.140, and crossing fresh paint zones when cones or markers are in place is also a violation of WAC 308-330-412.
*Filing a Claim:*
If you believe your vehicle was damaged due to County negligence and not from driving through wet paint, you may file a damage claim. Claims are reviewed by Kitsap County Risk Management and must demonstrate County negligence.
