Sixty-one years ago, on July 2, 1964, President Lyndon B. Johnson signed the Civil Rights Act into law — joined by Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and other civil rights leaders who marched, organized, and demanded that this country live up to its promise of equality.

It was a hard-won victory that struck down legal segregation and banned discrimination based on race, color, religion, sex, or national origin. And it laid the groundwork for even more progress — the Voting Rights Act of 1965 and the Fair Housing Act of 1968.

But the work didn’t end in 1964. It didn’t end in 1965. And it hasn’t ended today.

From voter roll purges to gerrymandering to restrictive voting laws, the tools of voter suppression have evolved. But the intention is the same: to silence our voices, especially in Black and Brown communities. Just as the Civil Rights Act was a response to the injustices of its time, we must respond to the challenges of ours.

The ballot box is where the next chapter of civil rights is being written. Here are three ways you can take action today:
