Dear Allies,
You are invited to join Global Labor Justice and the University of Ghana School of Law for a virtual presentation of new research on the conditions of labor migration from Ghana to the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries – Bahrain, Oman, Kuwait, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and the UAE.
In 2017, Ghana implemented a labor recruitment ban for work in GCC countries due to concerns of labor rights abuses of Ghanaian domestic workers. However, an increasing number of Ghanaians continue to migrate to the GCC each year to work in service sector jobs including in construction, hospitality, and domestic work sectors. While employed under visas that are tied to a sponsor employer – through a system known as kafala – Ghanaian workers report facing issues of passport confiscation, contract substitution, occupational safety risks, and other indicators of forced labor.
Drawing from legal analysis and interviews with government, NGO, and union stakeholders, this webinar will provide insight into the experiences of Ghanaian migrant workers migrating from Ghana to the GCC; an overview of the government systems, actors, and protocols that currently manage labor migration from Ghana; and an assessment of gaps in the existing system of regulation across this important labor migration corridor.
The webinar – which will be streamed from a live presentation of the work in Accra, Ghana – will feature a presentation of a working paper, and perspectives of panelists from across Ghana’s government and NGOs sectors. A final report will be published and made available to the public in Fall 2025.
The webinar will be conducted in English.
We look forward to sharing with you insights and perspectives on this exciting new research! Please contact Dani Douglas at [email protected] with any questions or concerns.
In Solidarity,
Dani Douglas
