Congrats to Senate Republicans on passing their disastrous budget. They just voted to rip Medicaid and food assistance from millions so billionaires can get another yacht.
Hell of a legacy. But that’s not all this bill does, so let me back this up a second.
Two years ago, Congress passed the Inflation Reduction Act and brought over $13 billion in investments and 13,000 good-paying jobs to Arizona. Tons more nationwide. High-paying, union jobs with full pensions and high-quality health insurance.
These jobs finally gave hardworking people a real shot at the American Dream. That’s what’s possible when you go to Congress and try to do good stuff for the people you represent. And yesterday, Republicans in the Senate voted to take that all away and give another tax break to billionaires.
Republicans are abandoning the people they claim to fight for. They campaigned on lowering costs, but under this bill, families are going to pay $110 more per year on utility bills. It rolls back tax cuts for families to make energy-efficient improvements to their homes, and it doesn’t end there.
You thought Republicans in Congress cared about the opioid crisis? I put up an amendment trying to stop them from gutting Medicaid funding for opioid addiction treatment. They voted it down. If you’re battling addiction and depending on Medicaid, you’re on your own.
You thought they cared about waste, fraud and abuse? To get Lisa Murkowski’s vote, they gave a carveout for her state and several others that is going to incentivize fraud in food assistance. States with higher error rates in SNAP payments are going to have cuts delayed for two years while states with lower error rates face down those cuts immediately.
It’s hard to put into words how angry I am. Nobody liked this bill — except Steve Miller and Trump and the MAGA diehards. Nobody wanted it to pass, but a ton of them held their noses and voted for it anyway.
American families are going to pay the price because these cowards didn’t have the backbone to stand up to Trump.
The bad guys won this time, and I’m sorry about that. But we will hold them accountable. You can be sure of that.
Thank you for your support.
And please, hang in there.
