Dear John,
Today, the Senate passed the so-called “One Big Beautiful Bill Act”—a bill that drastically cuts funding for Medicaid, the Affordable Care Act, and other critical programs that help keep our communities fed, housed, healthy, and safe.
As a practicing ob/gyn and the President & CEO of Physicians for Reproductive Health, I want to be clear: this legislation is not about fiscal responsibility. It is about cruelty. It is a targeted attack on the health, dignity, and bodily autonomy of millions of people—especially those who are poor, Black and Indigenous, LGBTQIA2S+, or living in rural areas.
The “One Big Beautiful Bill Act” is the antithesis of its name. Federal programs like Medicaid, CHIP, SNAP, and comprehensive reproductive health care are all left at the mercy of lawmakers who prioritize junk science and political gain over the well-being of our communities.
Six months into a second Trump term, we’ve seen Title X gutted, abortion access further criminalized, and sustained attacks on those who provide and support comprehensive, evidence-based care. This is no accident. It is intentional.
As a physician, I am outraged. As a leader, I remain steadfast in the fight against this dangerous legislation. And as a member of this community, I am deeply grateful to be advocating alongside you.
This moment demands our resilience, our interdependence, and our courage. Your support allows us to continue advocating for policies rooted in compassion and evidence, and to uplift the voices of the providers and patients who are most impacted.
We will not give up hope. We will not back down.
In solidarity,
Jamila Perritt, MD MPH FACOG
